Tells about Max (Max Records), a lonely 9-year-old boy who feels that his brother, Claire (Pepita Emmerichs), and his mother, Connie (Catherine Keener), begin to stay away from him. Upset with the situation, Max made a fuss when his mother’s girlfriend (Mark Ruffalo) came to visit. As a result, a fight between Max and his mother made Max run away from his house.
Using a canoe, Max sailed the ocean and arrived on a foreign island. There, he meets seven giant-sized strange creatures namely Carol (James Gandolfini) who is sensitive, Ira (Forest Whitaker) who always speaks in a soft voice, Judith (Catherine O’Hara) who is pessimistic, Alexander (Paul Dano) who resembles a goat and feel always set aside, Douglas (Chris Cooper) who is like a bird and is a close friend of Carol, Bernard (Michael Berry, Jr.) who has a body like a buffalo and never speaks though, and KW (Lauren Ambrose) who likes to be alone and liked by Carol. Soon, Max and the seven creatures quickly became familiar. In fact, Max was made king of them. However, Max’s explosive nature turned out to be an obstacle to their intimacy.
