Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a paleontologist on an expedition to Antarctica. Jack goes on the expedition with two of his colleagues, Frank (Jay O. Sanders) and Jason (Dash Mihok). They drilled Larsen Ice Shelf to look for ice core samples given to NOAA.
Then, Jack presented his findings on global warming at the UN conference in New Delhi. Jack found, 10,000 years ago, global warming changed the Earth’s climate into an Ice Age. He said, that could happen again in 100 to 1,000 years from now. What happens when humans don’t stop polluting the atmosphere.
However, most diplomats, including the Vice President of the United States (Kenneth Welsh), are not convinced by Jack’s theory. Until finally, at the conference, Jack met Professor Terry Rapson (Ian Holm) from the Hedland Climate Research Center in Scotland. Professor Terry is tracking the world’s ocean currents. Terry Rapson tells Jack, the melting of the polar ice caps makes the salt levels unbalanced.
Then the temperature of the ocean current drops 13 degrees. The decrease was shown from two buoys in the North Atlantic. Terry Rapson concluded that polar ice melt has disrupted the North Atlantic currents. On the other hand, the climate on the surface of the earth is changing for the worse. Tokyo was hit by softball hail, snow began to fall in New Delhi, and Los Angeles was a tornado.
