Merantau is a film that tells the story of wandering traditions in Minangkabau. The tradition of wandering is an obligation for young people in Minangkabau.
This story begins with a story in a family with a Minangkabau traditional background. The family consists of a mother (Christine Hakim) and her two sons named Yayan (Donny Alamsyah) and Yuda (Iko Uwais).
According to Minang custom, when a boy has grown up he must go abroad to look for his identity and life experience. This dilemma is faced by the mother who does not want to see her child leave her but on the other hand the habits of the Minang people who have to migrate.
Synopsis Merantau
Long story short the boy named Yuda who mastered the martial arts of Silat Tiger finally went to Jakarta, in his journey he met someone named Erik. In Yuda, Erik saw that he was so eager to migrate to Jakarta. But apparently the city of Jakarta is not as beautiful as imagined, so he advised Yuda.
Arriving in Jakarta, he went to the address he was looking for, namely Pencak silat school. But apparently really unexpected, the school was already gone, all that was left was the debris. It was unthinkable to Yuda where he wanted to go, finally, he decided to spend the night on land he wanted to build.
In the midst of his struggle to face the rigors of the city of Jakarta, he accidentally met a small boy named Adit (Yusuf Aulia) who wanted to steal his wallet. From there the beginning of all the struggles of Yuda began. Adit has an older sister named Astri (Sisca Jessica), who is often persecuted by her “boss”. Feeling unacceptable, Yuda then beat up the person who tortured Astri, Jhoni (Alex Abbad).
Apparently the problem was not finished there. Jhoni holds a grudge against Astri, then kidnaps and sells it to a gang of sellers of girls led by Ratger (Mads Koudal) and his right hand named Luc (Laurent Basor).
Long story short Astri was caught, Yuda again struggled to free Astri. He did not expect he had to face Eric, someone he knew on the way to Jakarta.
Eric was commissioned by Ratger to finish off Yuda. A fierce battle ensued between the two in an elevator and Erik was defeated. It turned out that outside the elevator was waiting for Ratger’s fruit boy to finish off Yuda, but Eric protected Yuda until he was shot dead by Ratger’s men.
Yuda finally found the place of capturing Astri and the other girls. Turns out there was waiting for Ratger, Luc, and his men. The unequal fight ensued and won by Yuda, so Yuda managed to free the girls who were kidnapped. But unexpectedly it turned out that Ratger jabbed the iron at Yuda. Until finally Yuda could not survive anymore. Before he died, he advised Astri to return the inheritance from his father, which his mother had entrusted to Yuda.
